The popularity of online gambling and casinos has only grown in the last decade. I’ve seen many new online casinos and gambling sites pop up in recent years. With opportunities to set up new sites, there has also been an increased chance for shady or illegal sites to emerge as gambling businesses.
That’s where gambling authorities come in. They supervise all casinos and online gambling sites within a specific jurisdiction and often have regulations that officiate any new casino. Most countries have their own gambling authority for their activities, but here are 5 gambling authorities you should know about.

One of the most popular and well-known gambling authorities is The UK Gambling Commission. It was established in 2007 as a regulator for all gambling sites within the UK, Scotland, and Wales. It gained more responsibility after the Gambling Licensing and Advertising Bill was passed in 2014.
It is also one of the strictest gambling authorities, setting high standards for legal compliance and fair operations in the online gambling industry. It oversees most betting activities, except for sports betting. They’re also widely known for issuing over 300 casinos with licenses and imposing high fines on offenders, with fines reaching as high as $13 million.
If you’re a big fan of iGaming, then you can thank the Malta Gaming Authority, as they were the first EU authority to issue online gaming licenses to casinos. It was established in 2001 as the Lotteries and Gaming Authority before changing its name to the Malta Gaming Authority in 2015.
They’re also known for their strict regulatory policies, although slightly more relaxed than the UK Gambling Commission. Casinos with an MGA license can operate outside of the EU market, even in places where there are no regulatory bodies, such as Norway, Finland, and Canada.
The Curacao Internet Gambling Association was established in 2002 under the Curacao Gaming Control Board. It is a popular choice for offshore online casino operators due to its relatively lenient regulatory policies. The authority first began issuing Master licenses to operators, who can then issue “sublicenses” based on their master license.
The Gibraltar Licensing Authority was established in 2005 and has regulations similar to that of the Malta Gaming Authority. The UK Gambling Act of 2005 was enforced by the Gibraltar Licensing Authority, changing the entire scene of gambling in the EU market.
The Licensing Authority is responsible for reviewing applications and issuing licenses to casinos that wish to operate under the regulations of the Gibraltar tax codes. Any casino or sportsbook under the Gibraltar Licensing Authority only requires one license for all their services. The flexibility within their gambling laws has enabled them to issue over 150 licenses under different jurisdictions.
The Lotteries and Gambling Supervisory Inspection in Latvia was established in 1998 to control the gambling sector in the country. Its mission is to make gambling safe for all consumers and to ensure that all operators comply with the rules and regulations regarding all gambling activities within the country.
The Latvian Lotteries and Gambling Supervisory Inspection has undergone several new regulations and changes that have made it slightly more complicated than other regulatory bodies. They have become choosier in issuing new licenses to operators and have also drawn up a blacklist to disable access to over 102 gambling sites.
